Up for sale is a stunning and very nice 1974 Gibson Byrdland in classic Tobacco Sunburst finish, straight out of the Norlin-Era. This one is extra special — it was owned and played live by Rich O’Brien, the renowned country guitarist from Texas. A true piece of music history that looks good and plays even better.

This particular Gibson Byrdland is in overall very good condition. Definitely has some honest play wear on the surface of the guitar. But it's clear this guitar has been taken very good care of with no signs of abuse on the instrument. Some surface scratches and dings on front/back/sides of guitar from standard playing. Some wear, marks, scratches on pickguard from playing with a pick and fingers.

Honestly... the Tobacco Sunburst finish on this particular Byrdland looks absolutely incredible. I've handled and seen numerous Sunburst finish Gibson's in my life. But the Sunburst finish on this guitar is very evenly spread through the entire body of the guitar (especially the back and the back of the neck). It Burst starts out pretty dark on the edges... which gradually transitioning into a very bright burst right in the center of the body. Looks AMAZING when you place this guitar on a guitar stand in a bright room setting. Truly looks like a piece of high quality artwork.

The fretboard has been recently oiled (DUNLOP LEMON OIL) and now plays excellent and super smooth. The tonewood on this instrument has opened up throughout the decades with true checking and patina on hardware. This is TRUE VINTAGE wear - none of that manufactured factory relic... this is THE REAL DEAL. Some surface smudges, scratches, minor dings from normal playing over the decades. Some slight oxidation and vintage patina forming on the metal hardware from natural aging.  NO HEADSTOCK CRACK.

This Byrdland has that unmistakable Gibson warmth. Through a quality tube amp on a clean channel, the tone is buttery smooth, round, and full of life — jazz chords, country licks, and soulful runs all bloom with richness and clarity.

Kick in some distortion, and it transforms into a different beast: gritty, crunchy, thick, and meaty. Think Ted Nugent in full flight — walls of sound, sustain for days, and that aggressive midrange punch that makes rock ’n’ roll fans grin from ear to ear. It’s a type of guitar that refuses to be boxed into one genre... country, jazz, rock, blues... it handles them all with authority. Played mainly through a Fender Princeton Reverb and Twin Reverb clean. Takes pedals very well too (Tube Screamer / Distortion / Reverb Pedals).

For a guitar that’s over 50 years old, it’s in remarkable condition. Honest playwear, but nothing that affects performance. Frets are healthy, neck is straight, action is smooth, and electronics are clean. It’s ready to go — whether straight to the stage or into a serious collection.

Overall, Gibson Byrdlands are pretty rare and low in production numbers in the Gibson guitar lineup. They don’t show up often, and when they do, they’re usually kept in collections. This one has both provenance and playability. If you’re after a vintage Gibson with history, vibe, and tone for days — this is it.
