1994 Fender Precision Bass Lyte Deluxe
Autographed by Tommy Emmanuel (2009)
Made in Japan

___

Up for sale is a very nice Japanese made Fender Precision Bass Lyte Deluxe in natural wood finish.

The Precision Bass Lyte models came exclusively to the Japanese market around mid 1984 and were produced to around late 1995. This specific 1994 Precision Lyte is one of the later models released (1994) before it was discontinued by Fender.

Guitar has some signs of play and wear but overall still in very good condition. Some minor surface scratches on front/back. Some superficial pick scratch marks above the neck area. Difficult to tell in photo because it blends in naturally with the natural wood finish. Gives it a unique worn look that you can't get from a guitar with color paint.

Some natural oxidation on metal bridge that can be cleaned. No headstock crack, low to almost no fretwear. No loose neck pocket issues common with some Precision Bass models. Professional setup done by my trusted guitar tech.

Very nice and comfortable slightly slimmer modern C-Shaped neck with 22 medium jumbo frets. Neck almost feels like an electric guitar neck. Very easy to play up and down the frets for pick use, slap bass or standard fingers.

Features a slightly smaller P-Bass body for lighter weight and playing comfort without sacrificing tone, look or feel.

Super sturdy and heavy gold bridge and gold tuners to match. Reminds me of the bridge from Fender's "The Strat" models from the 80's.

VERY INTERESTING active P/J pickups with black Fender ceramic magnets and a 9-Volt preamp with Volume/Pan/Bass/Treble controls. Truly a diverse sounding pickup with tons of different tone settings that you cannot get from a standard bass guitar.

Previous owner had the guitar autographed at a Tommy Emmanuel meet-and-greet in 2009. No official documentation. If you have time to get the autograph professionally authenticated - the guitar will be worth a lot more.

Overall, this is a very well made Japanese Fender bass guitar with superb tone, high quality parts and a unique/interesting backstory.

Some of these 80s-90s Japanese made Fenders have been very comparable to USA made guitars.

This MIJ P-Bass Lyte is no exception.

Fender bass guitars are some of the most iconic and widely used instruments in the music world, known for their versatility, playability, and distinctive sound. Fender offers a range of bass guitars, with the most famous being the Fender Precision Bass and the Fender Jazz Bass. These basses have been used in a wide variety of genres, from rock and jazz to funk, punk, and beyond.

Here’s a breakdown of the most popular Fender bass guitars and their features:

1. Fender Precision Bass (P-Bass)

Overview

  • The Fender Precision Bass (often referred to as the P-Bass) is one of the most influential and widely recognized bass guitars in history. Introduced in 1951, it was the first electric bass to feature a solid body and a pickup designed for bass frequencies.
  • Known for its powerful, punchy sound, the Precision Bass has become a staple in rock, pop, and funk music.

Key Features

  • Body: Typically made of alder or ash, giving it a balanced tone with plenty of midrange punch.
  • Neck: The P-Bass often features a maple neck with a rosewood or maple fretboard, offering a smooth playing experience.
  • Pickups: The P-Bass features a single split-coil pickup located in the middle of the body. This pickup provides a thick, punchy tone with a strong low end, making it ideal for rhythm and power playing.
  • Sound: The Precision Bass is known for its deep, powerful low end and tight, focused mids. It’s great for rock, punk, metal, and funk.
  • Playability: The P-Bass has a slightly wider neck compared to the Jazz Bass, which gives it a comfortable feel for players who prefer a more substantial neck.

Popular Models

  • American Professional II Precision Bass
  • Player Precision Bass (more affordable option)
  • Vintera '50s and '60s Precision Bass (vintage-inspired models)

2. Fender Jazz Bass (J-Bass)

Overview

  • The Fender Jazz Bass (J-Bass) was introduced in 1960 as a more sleek, contoured alternative to the Precision Bass. It’s known for its versatile tone and faster neck, making it popular among players who want a more articulate sound and faster playability.
  • The J-Bass is widely used in jazz, funk, rock, and fusion due to its ability to produce both warm, round tones and bright, cutting sounds.

Key Features

  • Body: Typically made of alder or ash, with a curvier, more ergonomic design than the Precision Bass.
  • Neck: The Jazz Bass features a narrower neck with a more pronounced taper, making it ideal for players who prefer a faster, more comfortable neck for soloing and intricate fingerwork.
  • Pickups: The J-Bass is equipped with two single-coil pickups, one near the bridge and one near the neck. This dual-pickup setup provides a wider range of tones, from a punchy, growling sound to a smooth, warm tone.
  • Sound: The Jazz Bass is known for its bright, snappy tone with a more pronounced treble compared to the Precision Bass. It’s great for players who want more definition and articulation in their playing.
  • Playability: The J-Bass’s narrower neck and contoured body make it more comfortable for players with smaller hands or those who prefer a faster neck.

Popular Models

  • American Professional II Jazz Bass
  • Player Jazz Bass (affordable option)
  • Vintera '60s Jazz Bass (vintage-inspired models)

3. Fender Mustang Bass

Overview

  • The Fender Mustang Bass is a short-scale bass, originally introduced in 1964. It’s popular among players who prefer a more compact, easy-to-play bass with a unique, punchy sound.
  • It’s known for its shorter scale length (30 inches), which makes it more comfortable for players who find traditional long-scale basses (34 inches) too cumbersome.

Key Features

  • Body: Typically made of poplar or basswood, offering a lighter and more compact design.
  • Neck: The Mustang Bass features a shorter neck with a slim profile, making it easier to play for those with smaller hands or for beginners.
  • Pickups: It usually comes with a single split-coil pickup, providing a punchy, mid-focused tone with a bit of growl.
  • Sound: The Mustang Bass has a snappy, punchy sound with a bit more midrange emphasis compared to full-scale basses.
  • Playability: Its short scale and lightweight body make it an excellent choice for players who want a more comfortable, easy-to-handle instrument.

Popular Models

  • Player Mustang Bass (affordable version)
  • American Performer Mustang Bass (higher-end model)

4. Fender Precision Bass Jr.

Overview

  • The Fender Precision Bass Jr. is a more compact version of the Precision Bass, designed for players who prefer a smaller, more portable instrument or for those with smaller hands. It features a shorter scale length and is often used by beginners or musicians who want a lightweight bass.

Key Features

  • Body: Smaller than the traditional Precision Bass, typically made of basswood.
  • Neck: Short-scale neck, making it easier to handle and play.
  • Pickups: Single split-coil pickup similar to the Precision Bass, delivering that classic P-Bass tone.
  • Sound: Offers the classic Precision Bass sound in a more compact package, with a slightly warmer, rounder tone due to the shorter scale.

5. Fender Jazz Bass V (5-String)

Overview

  • The Fender Jazz Bass V is a 5-string version of the classic Jazz Bass, offering players the ability to explore lower tunings while still maintaining the J-Bass tone. The added string gives players more flexibility, especially in genres like metal, funk, and progressive rock.

Key Features

  • Body: Similar to the traditional Jazz Bass, made of alder or ash.
  • Neck: Features a narrow neck with a 5-string setup for extended range.
  • Pickups: Dual single-coil pickups, providing a wide range of tones.
  • Sound: The 5-string Jazz Bass offers extra low-end without sacrificing the clarity and articulation of the traditional J-Bass sound.

Why Choose a Fender Bass Guitar?
