Up for sale is a very nice 2008 Gibson ES-339 made in Gibson's Custom Shop factory.
The ES-339 is basically an ES-335... except the body is a bit smaller. This smaller body shape makes the overall guitar lighter and more comfortable to hold/play both sitting down or standing up. The great thing however, is that despite the smaller size, it does not compromise in tone, feel or playability when comparing it to the ES-335.
This guitar is in overall excellent condition and was very well cared for. Has some normal superficial scratches, marks, pickguard swirls from play. Some surface scratches on front, back, sides. Some minor dust near bridge/pickup area from sitting in case - that can be easily cleaned off. Has a small surface checking crack on bottom of backside from sitting down. Very difficult to see unless looking for it. No effect on playability, simply visual. NO HEADSTOCK CRACK. NO MODIFICATIONS.
Has some absolutely gorgeous natural cherry wood grains all through the guitar. This includes the wood grains on the front/back and even the back neck of this ES-339. You can tell that Gibson's Custom Shop factory truly took a lot of time and care in building this specific ES-339. The grains are balanced very nicely and evenly all across the guitar. Looks very aesthetically clean from just a visual standpoint.
However a guitar is not just supposed to be seen... it's supposed to be played. And let me tell you what... this ES-339 plays incredibly well. SUPER SMOOTH FEELING NECK. Seriously one of my favorite modern Gibson necks I've played to date. Neck profile is a slightly modified Modern C shape. Maybe can pass as a modified D-shape neck to some. Very comfortable neck for playing standard chords (bar chords, etc) and also for single note playing. Great neck for soloing up and down the fretboard with ease.
The highlight of this ES-339 (to me), is most definitely the pickup tone quality. Original Gibson Twin Humbuckers... super clean sounding pickups. I play this ES-339 through a Fender Princeton Reverb or Twin Reverb... no pedals.. no effects.. just straight through the amp. Sounds incredible playing it raw. Best tonal combination to me is Volume at 8 / Tone at 4 (neck or middle pickup). Bridge pickup is also very smooth but with a subtle "spankiness" and bite. Overall a very well balanced pickup that is great for all genres.
Has the classic Gibson "crown logo" imprinted on middle of headstock with abalone inlays. Standard dot inlays on Rosewood Fretboard. Gibson Deluxe Vintage style tuners. Gold Gibson Custom Shop Logo imprinted behind neck. Standard Gibson style 4 knobs and toggle switch with 3 selectors (neck / bridge / middle).Â
Overall, this is just a very well built Gibson USA Custom Shop guitar. It is a guitar that will last you for ages and sound even better as time goes by. The Gibson Custom Shop tag doesn't hurt either... You will not be disappointed by this ES-339 CS...Â

The Gibson ES-339 is a semi-hollow electric guitar designed to offer the tonal richness and versatility of the classic Gibson ES-335, but in a more compact and manageable size. Introduced in 2007, the ES-339 bridges the gap between hollow-body and solid-body guitars, making it a favorite among players who want the warmth and resonance of a semi-hollow guitar without the bulk of a full-size body.
Key Features of the Gibson ES-339
1. Body and Construction
- Body Style: Semi-hollow design with a smaller, Les Paul-style body shape compared to the ES-335.
-
Tonewoods:
- Top, Back, and Sides: Made from laminated maple with a center block of solid maple to reduce feedback and increase sustain.
- Binding: Cream binding on the top and back adds a touch of elegance.
- Finish: Available in a variety of finishes, including Cherry Red, Vintage Sunburst, and Ebony.
2. Neck and Fingerboard
- Neck Material: Typically made from mahogany, offering warmth and sustain.
- Neck Profile: Comes in a rounded C or slim taper profile, depending on the model, providing comfort for different playing styles.
-
Fingerboard:
- Made from rosewood or ebony, depending on the edition.
- Features dot inlays (standard models) or block inlays (higher-end models).
- Scale Length: Standard Gibson 24.75-inch scale length, ensuring a warm, mellow tone and easy playability.

- Equipped with Gibson humbuckers, such as the Burstbuckers or '57 Classics, which provide a range of tones from warm and smooth to bright and biting.
-
Controls:
- 2 Volume Knobs, 2 Tone Knobs, and a 3-way toggle switch for pickup selection.
- Some models feature coil-splitting for single-coil tones, adding to the guitar's versatility.
4. Hardware

Sound and Tonal Characteristics
The Gibson ES-339 delivers the classic semi-hollow tone but with enhanced focus and clarity due to its smaller body.
- Warm and Resonant: The semi-hollow design provides a rich, resonant tone with natural overtones.
- Reduced Feedback: The solid maple center block minimizes feedback, making it suitable for high-gain settings.
- Versatility: The humbuckers produce a wide tonal range, making the ES-339 suitable for jazz, blues, rock, and even pop genres.
Playability
- Compact Size: The smaller body makes it more comfortable to hold and play, especially for guitarists used to solid-body guitars like the Les Paul.
- Weight: Lighter than a full-size ES-335, reducing player fatigue during long sessions.
Variants and Models
- ES-339 Studio: A more affordable version with simplified features, such as dot inlays and basic finishes.
- ES-339 Figured: Features a beautifully figured maple top for an upscale look.
- Custom Shop Versions: High-end models with premium finishes, hardware, and pickups.
Who Is the Gibson ES-339 For?
- Gigging Musicians: Its compact size, feedback resistance, and tonal versatility make it ideal for live performances.
- Jazz and Blues Players: The warm, smooth tones are perfect for these genres.
- Rock Guitarists: The humbuckers provide the bite and power needed for rock and even some heavier styles.
- Players Transitioning from Solid-Body Guitars: The ES-339’s smaller body offers a comfortable alternative to larger hollow-body guitars.
Conclusion
The Gibson ES-339 is a modern classic that combines the best of semi-hollow and solid-body guitars. With its versatile sound, comfortable size, and elegant design, it’s a fantastic choice for players seeking a do-it-all instrument with a touch of vintage charm.
