Up for sale is an absolutely beautiful Custom Shop Gibson CS-336F in a "figured cherry top" wood finish.

This guitar is all factory original, with no modifications or alterations done. Made from Gibson's Nashville, USA factory.

The overall condition is excellent. Has some regular minor surface scratches on the top and back from playing. Has some pickguard marks/swirls from playing with pick. Has a minor surface mark on bottom of body. Very difficult to see in pictures and unless you're looking for it. Some dust near pickup area that can be cleaned off. Some scratches in back from play. Other than those, this guitar is super solidly built with high quality parts. NO HEADSTOCK CRACK. ALL ORIGINAL.

For those who've played Gibson Custom Shops before.. you understand the difference in build quality compared to standard USA Gibson releases. Standard Gibson USA guitars are very very good. Custom Shop Gibson USA guitars are near perfect guitars. To the intermediate/professional level player, the difference is immediate.

The Gibson CS-336F is near identical to a Gibson ES-339 in terms of size/build/feel. The major difference however is how they built the body of the guitar.

This CS-336F is a fully carved out mahogany body rather than a traditional semi-hollowbody build. This gives incredible amount of sustain when playing chords/notes - more than a traditional ES-339. It's almost more similar to playing a Gibson Les Paul when your playing standard chords or bar chords... but instead with a semi-hollowbody build.

Very unique build style done by Gibson, but definitely much more tedious work to do when building the guitar. Action is low and very easy and smooth to play. Has been professionally set up and strung with D'Addarios NYXLs 10-46.

Super comfortable neck profile with very nice looking cherry wood grains on the back. This neck profile is more of a slimmer modern C type. Definitely not chunky like a baseball bat... but more similar to modern Fender Telecaster neck with a slightly wider base for comfortable (post 2010 Telecasters). It's a very nice neck profile for players who enjoy blues/jazz chords... and those who like using their thumb when playing. Overall a great feeling neck from top to bottom.

Highlight of this guitar to me is easily how the guitar looks in general. You get your classic Gibson cherry red finish that they do on their ES-335, 339, 355, etc models. But the figured cherry red makes the wood grains really stand out.

From far away, the guitar looks like a solid cherry red. But when you look at it closer, you can see all the subtle details in the cherry wood. The front looks nice, but the cherry wood in the back looks better with much more attention to detail done by Gibson Custom Shop.

Original Gibson Deluxe vintage style tuners. Standard 4 gold knobs (2 volume/2 tone) + 3 way toggle switch (neck/middle/bridge). Classic Gibson pearl "crown" logo in center of headstock. I prefer the Gibson Crown logo on a headstock than a blank black headstock.

Factory original Gibson 57' humbucking twin pickups. Pair this CS-336F with any quality Fender tube amp and that's all you really need. No need for pedals, just play it straight raw through the amp. The tone for each pickup is supreme. Neck pickup tone with volume 8, tone 6 is my favorite. Great sounding guitar for clean blues, jazz.

If you want to use a pedal, pair it with any overdrive pedal + reverb pedal and you can cover any rock song you want. All the Gibson ES semi-hollow guitars are super versatile sounding guitars that can play literally any style of music.

Overall this is guitar another great example from Gibson's Nashville Custom Shop Factory. The build quality is superb, the tone quality is superb. This is the type of guitar that can be passed down for generations if maintained properly and with care. One of my favorite guitars I’ve played to date.

The Gibson CS-336 is a high-end, semi-hollow electric guitar crafted by Gibson's Custom Shop. It’s a compact and meticulously designed instrument that combines the tonal characteristics of a semi-hollow guitar with the comfort and size of a solid-body guitar. Unlike other semi-hollow models like the ES-335 or ES-339, the CS-336 features a carved, solid wood construction, making it unique in its class. This model is particularly favored by professional musicians for its superior craftsmanship, tonal richness, and versatility.

Key Features of the Gibson CS-336

1. Body and Construction

  • Body Style: Semi-hollow with a compact, Les Paul-sized body.
  • Carved Construction:
    • The CS-336 is carved from a single piece of mahogany for the back and sides, with a carved maple top. This solid wood construction enhances sustain and resonance compared to laminated guitars.
    • The center block is integral to the body, further reducing feedback while maintaining a warm, semi-hollow tone.
  • Finish: High-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer in various finishes, such as Cherry Sunburst, Vintage Sunburst, and Natural.

2. Neck and Fingerboard

  • Neck Material: Solid mahogany for warmth and sustain.
  • Neck Profile: Typically a '60s Slim Taper or Rounded C shape for comfortable playability.
  • Fingerboard:
    • Made of rosewood with mother-of-pearl dot or block inlays.
    • Features 22 medium jumbo frets.
  • Scale Length: Standard Gibson 24.75 inches, offering a familiar and comfortable playing experience.
  • Nut: High-quality bone nut for enhanced sustain and tuning stability.

3. Electronics

  • Pickups:
    • Typically equipped with Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers, which deliver a warm, vintage-inspired tone.
    • Some models feature upgraded pickups, such as Burstbuckers, for more modern tonal options.
  • Controls:
    • Standard Gibson layout with 2 Volume Knobs, 2 Tone Knobs, and a 3-way toggle switch for pickup selection.

4. Hardware

  • Bridge: ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge paired with a stopbar tailpiece, providing excellent sustain and intonation.
  • Tuners: Grover Rotomatics or vintage Kluson-style tuners for reliable performance.
  • Gold or Nickel Hardware: Depending on the finish and edition.

Sound and Tonal Characteristics

The Gibson CS-336 produces a rich, resonant tone that sits between the warmth of a hollow-body guitar and the focused sustain of a solid-body guitar.

  • Warm and Mellow: The mahogany body adds warmth and depth, making it ideal for jazz, blues, and classic rock.
  • Articulate and Clear: The maple top and humbuckers provide clarity and bite, allowing for expressive lead tones and crisp rhythm playing.
  • Dynamic Range: It responds well to touch, offering nuanced tones for both clean and overdriven settings.

Playability

  • Compact Size: Its smaller body is perfect for players who find larger semi-hollow guitars like the ES-335 cumbersome.
  • Lightweight Design: Easier to handle during long performances or practice sessions.
  • Ergonomic Feel: The carved body and smooth neck make it exceptionally comfortable to play.

Who Is the Gibson CS-336 For?

  • Professional Musicians: Its high-quality construction and versatile tone make it a go-to instrument for recording and live performances.
  • Jazz and Blues Players: The warm, resonant sound is perfect for these genres.
  • Rock Guitarists: The humbuckers and semi-hollow design provide the power and sustain needed for rock tones.
  • Collectors: As a Custom Shop instrument, the CS-336 is a premium guitar that holds its value well.

Differences Between CS-336 and Other Gibson Models

  • CS-336 vs. ES-335:
    • The CS-336 is smaller and carved from solid wood, whereas the ES-335 is larger and made from laminated wood.
    • The CS-336 offers more sustain and a tighter tone due to its construction.
  • CS-336 vs. ES-339:
    • Both are compact semi-hollow guitars, but the CS-336 has a carved solid wood body, while the ES-339 uses laminated construction.
    • The CS-336 is a more premium instrument with richer tonal characteristics.

Conclusion

The Gibson CS-336 is a masterpiece of guitar craftsmanship, offering the best of both semi-hollow and solid-body designs. Its compact size, premium materials, and versatile tone make it a favorite among discerning players. Whether you're performing on stage, recording in the studio, or simply enjoying its incredible playability at home, the CS-336 is a guitar that delivers in every aspect.
