Up for sale is one of my favorite electric guitars I've ever played... John Mayer's PRS Signature model.. aka the "Silver Sky".
The overall condition of this guitar is excellent. This Silver Sky was bought to only be recorded in the studio for one album session. Has some minor surface scratches on body + pickguard from playing with a pick. Small mark/ding near side of body. Very difficult to see in pictures but I tried my best to show. Some minor oxidation on bridge area (from palm muting). Some minor play marks on bottom sides of neck from play... very common and naturally unique to ONLY Maple Fretboards. Everything is simply visual with no effect on playability. NO HEADSTOCK CRACK. ALL ORIGINAL.
Other than those, this guitar is in incredible shape. Intonation was perfectly setup by PRS right out of the factory. This guitar has been strung with NYXL 10-46 electrics strings - gives you a perfect balance of thick and thin.
Paul Reed Smith basically took the foundation of the Fender Stratocaster... but put his own twist to it. The famous "PRS Bird Inlays" but hollowed out (unique to Maple). Standard 5 way selector switch. 3 knobs (1 volume/tone/tone). Reversed PRS headstock design (which John preferred). Super fast turning knobs for all 3. Open backplate style for a much cleaner look. Has a "birds-eye" wood mark on top of the PRS headstock. Adds a nice unique touch and individuality to a somewhat common Silver Sky.
The Tungsten metallic finish blends in very nicely with the solid maple neck and fretboard. You see so many Tungsten PRS Silver Sky's with a rosewood fretboard... however you don't see too many Tungstens with a maple neck.
I've A/B tested the Maple Silver Sky vs Rosewood Silver Sky and there definitely is a difference. Other than the visual look itself, the feel of both guitars are completely different. The Rosewood SS gives you more of a glossy feel to your hands because of the gloss type finish they used. The Maple SS gives you more of a raw, stripped down type of satin feel to your hands.
Both Rosewood + Maple SS are excellent - I enjoy playing both for different reasons. But those who prefer a more natural feeling type guitar will enjoy the Maple SS no doubt. The neck wood feel leans more towards a vintage acoustic guitar for this Maple SS.
Neck PROFILE is definitely late 50's/early 60's style Fender neck. As in, a modified C but with more girth in the middle. I LOVE this neck feel and profile. It's one of my favorite aspects of this guitar - those with larger sized hands will greatly appreciate this neck as well.
Pickups are PRS635JM.. honestly one of the most unique sounding pickups I've played. The tone get pretty hot when you max the Volume + Tone to 10... and this is when pairing with a quality tube amp. I usually put my amp to Volume 4... the Silver Sky Volume to 8... and the Tone to around 4-5 (neck pickup). TO ME, this is my favorite sounding tone combination. For John Mayer fan's, a good tone comparison is to the song "Vultures" on Continuum... You know what I mean...
Overall, the Silver Sky is just one of the best modern guitars made PERIOD. You don't even have to be a John Mayer fan to appreciate this guitar. Traditional Fender Stratocaster players will enjoy this as well as hardcore PRS lovers.
The Tungsten + Maple combo just makes it a tad bit better..

The PRS Silver Sky is a signature electric guitar designed in collaboration with renowned guitarist John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith (PRS Guitars). Released in 2018, the Silver Sky combines the classic features of a vintage Fender Stratocaster with PRS's renowned craftsmanship, quality, and playability. The result is a guitar that offers a vintage-inspired sound and feel, with modern enhancements to improve playability, tone, and stability.
Key Features of the PRS Silver Sky
1. Body Construction
- Shape: The Silver Sky features a double-cutaway body shape that is reminiscent of the classic Fender Stratocaster. It has a slightly more ergonomic and contoured design, making it comfortable to play while standing or sitting.
- Material: The body is made of alder, a wood commonly used for Strat-style guitars. Alder contributes to a balanced tone with a slightly scooped midrange, clear highs, and a tight low end. Alder is also lightweight, making the guitar comfortable to play for long sessions.
2. Neck and Fingerboard
- Neck Material: The neck of the Silver Sky is made from maple, which is a standard choice for guitars that require bright, articulate tones. Maple also provides a smooth feel and excellent durability.
- Neck Profile: The Silver Sky features a vintage-style "635JM" neck profile, which was designed with input from John Mayer. This profile is a slightly thicker "C" shape, offering more substance than a modern "C" neck while still being comfortable for players who like to perform both chord work and lead playing. It provides a fuller, more substantial feel in the hand compared to a traditional Strat neck.
- Fingerboard: The fingerboard is made from rosewood, providing a smooth playing surface and contributing to the guitar's overall warm tone. The fretboard has a 7.25" radius, which is a vintage-style curve that enhances chordal playability and makes it easier to bend notes while playing lead.
- Frets: The guitar features 22 frets, with medium-jumbo frets for better note definition and ease of bending.
3. Pickups and Electronics
- Pickups: The Silver Sky is equipped with three single-coil pickups designed by PRS specifically for this guitar. These pickups are voiced to capture the vintage Stratocaster tone but with a more modern and refined edge. The result is a bright, articulate tone with excellent clarity and dynamic response.
- Switching and Controls: The Silver Sky features a traditional 5-way pickup selector switch, allowing players to access a wide variety of tones. The controls consist of a master volume and two tone knobs, with one for the neck and middle pickups and the other for the bridge pickup. This allows for precise tonal shaping and a wide range of sounds from clean, glassy tones to more overdriven, midrange-focused sounds.
4. Hardware
- Bridge: The Silver Sky uses a vintage-style PRS tremolo bridge, which provides excellent tuning stability and smooth whammy bar action. This bridge design is optimized for subtle vibrato and string bending, allowing players to achieve expressive pitch changes without sacrificing tuning stability.
- Tuners: The guitar is equipped with PRS-designed locking tuners, which ensure superior tuning stability and make string changes easier and quicker.
- Nut: The Silver Sky features a bone nut, which helps improve tuning stability and enhances the overall tone of the guitar by allowing the strings to vibrate more freely.
5. Aesthetic Features
- Finish: The Silver Sky comes in a variety of vibrant, eye-catching finishes, including John Mayer's signature "Moon White", "Frost", "McCarty Sunburst", and more. The finishes are complemented by a gloss top and a satin-finished back, providing a smooth, comfortable feel against the player's body.
- Inlays: The guitar features PRS’s signature bird inlays on the fingerboard, adding a touch of elegance and helping the guitar stand out visually.
Why Choose the PRS Silver Sky?
- John Mayer’s Signature Sound: The Silver Sky is built to capture the essence of John Mayer's sound while adding modern enhancements. It offers vintage Strat-style tones with a more refined, polished feel, making it ideal for players who love Mayer's style but want the precision and craftsmanship of a PRS guitar.
- Comfortable Playability: The guitar's vintage-style neck profile and smooth rosewood fingerboard make it comfortable to play for extended periods. The neck is designed for both chord work and lead playing, and the 7.25" radius makes it easier to perform vintage-style bends.
- Versatile Tone: The combination of PRS-designed single-coil pickups and the 5-way switching system gives players access to a wide range of tones, from crisp and bell-like to warm and punchy. The guitar excels in genres such as blues, rock, pop, and country, thanks to its tonal versatility.
- Stunning Aesthetics: The Silver Sky is a visually striking guitar with its PRS bird inlays, vibrant finishes, and sleek design. It’s a guitar that’s as beautiful to look at as it is to play.
- Modern Upgrades: The Silver Sky includes locking tuners, a bone nut, and a PRS tremolo bridge, which enhance the guitar’s tuning stability and playability. These features improve upon traditional Strat-style designs, making the Silver Sky a more reliable and stable instrument for modern players.
Conclusion
The PRS Silver Sky is a modern take on the classic Stratocaster design, combining vintage-inspired tones with modern enhancements in playability and reliability. Designed with input from John Mayer, it delivers the articulate, dynamic tones that Mayer is known for, while also offering improved tuning stability and comfortable playability. Whether you’re a fan of Mayer's music or just looking for a high-quality, versatile guitar with vintage-style sound and modern features, the Silver Sky is an excellent choice.
